From in the early eighties in Kingston Jamaica, reggae dancehall music emerged as a reaction to the dominance of roots reggae. Initially, it was defined by MCs toasting on top of reggae riddims, quickly changing into a distinct mix of electronic sounds, infectious beats, and sometimes raw lyrics.
